I am not a fan of headphones that are not IEM. Its my belief that in ear audio is the best you can ever get with quality. But there are situations i.e. jogging in the city could be dangerous if cannot hear vehicles behind you!
The Koss Porta Pro was my choice because it was one of the cheapest pair of headphones that i hit upon! although I must say that the design did put me off at first. Went through a couple of reviews on the internet and was pretty much stoked to learn that the Koss Porta pro was out of this world! Cnet.com ranks it as one of the best headphones they’ve ever reviewed, needless to say I went for it. I tried it out on a plethora of music genres in my Music library and boy! this thing is fantastic – its without a question the best pair of headphones that I’ve ever owned. It was better than my Ultimate Ears/Sennheiser etc. and for a throw away price!
The lower frequencies are clean with more than decent “oomph” and the mid and higher end was also very natural and felt very clear. Infact you could own one of these and compare any other IEMs or headphones that you buy against it! it’s almost reference quality at an incredible price. The only drawback would be the retro design and the build. The plastic that is located at the ends may break if not handled with care. But again that shouldn’t stop you from owning one of these, I’ve got two of these just incase one of them breaks 🙂 The other important disadvantage i felt was that the maximum volume that the headphones were capable of were not adequately high. Infact wearing this while commuting would still be an exercise, since the feeble volume is sometimes not enough to overpower the ambient noise. Other than those two complaints, the Koss Porta pro is an incredible value for money and should be owned by every music fan.
Update:
A video review from a favorite blog of mine
Read the complete review at the Inner Fidelity blog.
I have to agree. I got a pair of these for Christmas, and they are by far the best headphones I’ve ever used.
Hey I was just wondering do you do all the writing yourself or do you have guest posters. I’m loving your blog. Thanks.
I do not have any guest posters (so far) and do the writing on my own. Thanks for your comment, greatly appreciated.
Hey, I am looking forward to buy it. Any changes in your opinion since? Any other recommendations?
The Koss Porta Pro has been and will be for a while the best in its class, my opinion still stands. Also have added a recent video review from the Inner Fidelity blog, the complete review has more technical info. if you’re into that kind of stuff. Go ahead and get it, you wouldn’t be disappointed! So far there hasn’t been anything that would best the Porta Pros – at that price range! Though if you’re willing to spend a bit more have a look at the Sennheiser PX100-II.
