Binaural Recording – Head-fi TV

I learn’t about Binaural recordings not long back and this episode of Head-Fi TV really helped. The binaural sample tracks are worth a listen, if you are new to the world of binaural recording then you should definitely give them a shot. My first experience with binaural tracks were with the Pearl Jam album “Binaural” (yeah! ..that’s the title), that album had atleast a couple of tracks recorded binaurally and its worth a listen. The tracks on “Explorations in Space and Time” are definitely worth listening if you’re a Jazz fan or if you’re just curious what the deal is with binaural recording. If you’ve been a long time headphone listener then you will notice the change in the soundstage and presentation, everybody else are not going to be impressed!

TIP:  Make sure to watch this video with headphones on.  You’ll understand why a few minutes in.

Got a tweet with more interesting binaural goodness, urge you to check out the link in the tweet for some geek giggles 😉

I am not a fan of headphones that are not IEM. Its my belief that in ear audio is the best you can ever get with quality. But there are situations i.e. jogging in the city could be dangerous if cannot hear vehicles behind you!

The Koss Porta Pro was my choice because it was one of the cheapest pair of headphones that i hit upon! although I must say that the design did put me off at first. Went through a couple of reviews on the internet and was pretty much stoked to learn that the Koss Porta pro was out of this world! Cnet.com ranks it as one of the best headphones they’ve ever reviewed, needless to say I went for it. I tried it out on a plethora of music genres in my Music library and boy! this thing is fantastic – its without a question the best pair of headphones that I’ve ever owned. It was better than my Ultimate Ears/Sennheiser etc. and for a throw away price!

The lower frequencies are clean with more than decent “oomph” and the mid and higher end was also very natural and felt very clear. Infact you could own one of these and compare any other IEMs or headphones that you buy against it! it’s almost reference quality at an incredible price. The only drawback would be the retro design and the build. The plastic that is located at the ends may break if not handled with care. But again that shouldn’t stop you from owning one of these, I’ve got two of these just incase one of them breaks 🙂 The other important disadvantage i felt was that the maximum volume that the headphones were capable of were not adequately high. Infact wearing this while commuting would still be an exercise, since the feeble volume is sometimes not enough to overpower the ambient noise. Other than those two complaints, the Koss Porta pro is an incredible value for money and should be owned by every music fan.
